The Introduction on Spo2 Sensors

The blood oxygen probe, also called SpO2Sensor/SpO2 Probe, refers to fix the probe finger cuff on the fingertips for measurement. It uses the finger as a transparent container for hemoglobin and uses red light with a wavelength of 66onm and 94onm infrared light as the light source and detects the intensity of light transmission through the tissue to calculate the hemoglobin concentration and blood oxygen saturation. Through Spo2 monitoring, you can get Spo2 pulse rate and pulse wave, which can be used for blood oxygen monitoring of various patients. Usually, the other end is an ECG monitor.

Definition of blood oxygen saturation

Blood oxygen saturation refers to the maximum solubility of oxygen in the blood, and the combination of oxygen in the blood mainly depends on hemoglobin. Under normal circumstances, it has no changes, but in a high carbon monoxide situation, it will change, causing carbon monoxide poisoning, that is, gas poisoning. Because carbon monoxide has a high affinity for hemoglobin, it will preferentially combine with carbon monoxide. It causes the risk of lowering the oxygen in the blood. Normal arterial blood oxygen saturation is 98%, and venous blood is 75%. Generally, the Spo2 should not be less than 94%. If it is below 94%, it means insufficient oxygen supply. Some scholars thought when Spo2<9o%, it is hypoxemia. And they believe that when Spo2 is higher than 7o%, the accuracy can reach ±2%, and when Spo2 is lower than 7o%, there may be errors. Clinically, doctors have a comparison between the Spo2 and the arterial blood oxygen saturation value. They believe that the Spo2 reading can reflect the patient's respiratory function and, to a certain extent, reflect the changes in pulse blood oxygen. The routine application of pulse oximetry monitoring can provide a meaningful parameter for clinical observation of changes in the disease, avoiding repeated blood sampling for patients and reducing nurses’ burden. The workload is worth promoting.

Features and advantages of the Spo2 probe

The Spo2 instrument includes three main parts: probe, function module, and display part. For most monitors on the market, the technology for detecting Spo2 is already very mature. The accuracy of the Spo2 value detected by a monitor is related to the probe. Many factors affect the detection of the sensor. The detection device, medical wire, and connection technology used by the spo2 transducer will influence the detection result.

More info - The Spo2 Sensor Working Rules

(1) Detection device: The light-emitting diode and photodetector device that detect the signal are the core components of the probe. It is also the key to determining the accuracy of the detection value. The theoretical red-light wavelength is 66onm, and the ideal number obtained when the infrared light is 94onm. However, due to the complexity of the manufacturing process, the wavelength of the red light and infrared light would have a deviation. The magnitude of the difference of the light wavelength will affect the detected value. Therefore, the manufacturing process of light-emitting diodes and photoelectric detection devices is important.

(2) Medical wire: In addition to using imported materials (reliable in terms of high elastic strength and corrosion resistance), it is double-layer shielding, which can suppress noise interference and keep the signal intact compared to single-layer or no shielding.

(3) Soft pad: The probe produced by Unimed Medical uses a specially designed soft pad (finger pad), which is comfortable, reliable, and non-allergenic in contact with the skin. And it is suitable for patients of different shapes. And it adopts a full-wrapped design, which can avoid interference caused by light leakage due to finger movements.

(4) Finger clip: The body finger clip is made of fire-resistant non-toxic ABS material. It is strong and not easily damaged. A light-shielding plate is on the finger clip, which can better shield the peripheral light source.

(5) One of the main reasons for the damage of Spo2 is that the spring is loose, and the elasticity is not enough to make the clamping force insufficient. Unimed medical adopts high tension electric lock carbon steel spring, which is reliable and durable.

(6) Terminal: To ensure the reliable connection and durability of the probe, consider the attenuation in the signal transmission process on the connection terminal with the monitor.

(7) Connection process: The connection process of the probe is also very important to the test results.

(8) In terms of accuracy, ensure that the Spo2 value is 70% to 100%, and the error does not exceed 2% with higher accuracy for more reliable detection.
